Vanda Coatings Awarded SMAS Worksafe Certificate with SSIP Verification
Health and Safety (H&S) is a key issue throughout the construction industry and we have always taken this aspect of our work very seriously. We follow our well thought out Health and Safety Policy to the letter and our high standards are supported by the accolade of having Safecontractor certification for two years running. Now, we have another string to our H&S bow since Vanda Coatings have been awarded a SMAS Worksafe Certificate with SSIP verification.
Our Worksafe Contractor Membership Certificate confirms that our H&S documentation has been checked by Safety Management Advisory Services Limited (SMAS). Being part of a SMAS Worksafe Scheme demonstrates our high level of health and safety and shows us to be proficient having been validated by SSIP. The Safety Schemes in Procurement Competence Forum (SSIP) is an accredited assessment provider of health and safety pre-qualification schemes and it has SMAS as one of its members.
According to CDM 2007 (Construction Design and Management), principal contractors have to ensure that any company or individual they do business with is competent in terms of health and safety. Consequently, they are bound to guarantee that their sub-contractors or suppliers are skilled in terms of carrying out the specified work and that they apportion the appropriate resources to it.
Many principal contractors rely on an external validating body to take responsibility for making sure suppliers exhibit H&S competency. Furthermore, since the inception of SSIP a wide range of principal contractors are only happy using contractors or suppliers who are certified by a member of the SSIP Forum.
Certification reduces bureaucracy throughout the construction industry during tendering. Pre-qualification questionnaires administered to assess H&S competency can be bypassed to a great extent because a SMAS certificate displays a high standard.
Through certification, Vanda Coatings have done the leg work and we have proved our Stage 1 H&S proficiency according to health and safety criteria stipulated in construction guidelines. This process was carried out according to the CDM regulations whereby Stage 1 involves verifying the relevant Health and Safety Management credentials. The particular core criteria are stipulated by the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) which is the national independent watchdog in the CDM 2007 Approved Code of Practice (ACoP).
Criteria included a comprehensive Health and Safety Policy, proof that all our staff are appropriately qualified, the preparation of thorough risk and method statements and meticulous accident records. The assessment of these elements determined our H&S capability and Vanda Coatings were duly awarded a SMAS Worksafe Certificate with SSIP verification.
