Shopping Centre Re-Coating Project

The Designer Outlet in Swindon houses major retail units offering designer clothes and goods. Boasting over 100 shops with fashion brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Hugo Boss and Gant situated there. We were approached by their main contractor to undertake re-coating work to the retail units, architectural trusses and steel columns as part of a major refurb upgrade.

The centre itself is situated in a Grade II listed site which used to house a major Great Western Railway Works. The building was opened in 1843 and some of the architectural features at a high level were proposed to be recoated to highlight the industrial and aesthetic look of the building. It is one of the largest undercover shopping centres in Europe.

Our teams started working as soon as the centre closed to the public until an hour before the centre opened. This allowed us to complete the work without disrupting the centres trading hours and affecting business or customers.

A lot of the work was to be carried out at a high level and we had to provide specialist access to enable us to access all of the trusses and higher-level columns. All of our employees hold IPAF certificates that enable them to use elevated platforms. Most of the work was carried out from these machines but some of the areas were particularly difficult to reach.  We had to source a specialist machine, with only one in the country available.

The wing we were working on was to be recoated in a more modern colour scheme. The full scope was all external retail units and steels including trusses, columns and re-coating the original brickwork. The job was completed in a timely manner to meet programme deadlines and to a very high standard.

The end result is an impressive colour change that allows customers walking through the shopping centre to appreciate the heritage and history of the building providing a much-improved shopping experience.
