[Case Study] Spraying Aluminium Curtain Wall Atrium
Vanda Coatings specialist teams recently completed a re-coating project at a site in Wilmslow. The existing curtain wall section to the building’s atrium was tired and in need of a transformation.
The client requested that the existing powder coated framework should change colour from white to black(RAL 9005. More about RAL Colours).
Curtain Wall Masked Up

The existing glazing panels and surrounding brickwork are fully protected by masking aluminum framework to the atrium. The existing white powder-coated framework is prepared by sanding.

Once the aluminium framework has been completely prepared the atrium entranceway is sprayed to the new colour in specialist two-pack paints

Once the paint has been applied the areas are de-masked and handed over to the client for their approval.
The Atrium Re-coating Process
Powder coated aluminium is an ideal substrate for atrium sections. The metal is strong and adaptable and allows architectural features such as the curtain wall on this commercial building. The site site had been surveyed previously which allowed to assess the access conditions.
The access to the top of the section required a boom lift that would enable to reach all areas. All sections that did not require re-coating were protected by masking. Our operatives are experienced in masking techniques having had years on job practice. This is a skill that shouldn’t be underestimated.
Once the masking has been completed, the aluminium sections require preparation. The existing powder coating is cleaned then sanded by mechanical sanding to get a key in the paint work. After the preparation work is completed, spraying can commence. The team use specialist commercial grade paints that have been designed to cover and protect existing powder coated metalwork. In this project the client requested a black finish (RAL 9005).
Following spraying, the areas are carefully checked over and once satisfied our teams hand the areas over to the client for their sign off.
